杨宪益《儒林外史》英译本的译者行为批评分析

A Study of the Translator Behavior Criticism in Yang Xianyi’s English Translation of The Scholars

《儒林外史》是我国著名的古典长篇小说,被誉为讽刺小说的巅峰之作。在翻译上,杨宪益的《儒林外史》英译本是迄今为止唯一的全译本。本文拟以译者行为批评理论为指导,从翻译内、外两个层次,分析《儒林外史》译者杨宪益“求真”的“译内行为”和“务实”的“译外行为”。研究发现,在“求真-务实”译者行为连续统评价模式上,杨译本的译者行为偏于“求真”兼顾“务实”,且两者的平衡程度较高,符合译者“求真为本,务实为用”的一般性行为规律。

The Scholars is a famous classical full-length novel in China, which is regarded as the peak of satirical novel. In terms of translation, Yang Xianyi’s English version of The Scholars is the only complete version so far. Guided by the theory of Translator Behavior Criticism, this paper attempts to analyze Yang Xianyi’s “truth-seeking” intra-translation behavior 7 and “Utility-attaining” extra-translation behavior from both the internal and external levels of translation. It is found that the translator’s behavior in Yang’s translation tends to be both “truth-seeking” and “Utility-attaining” in terms of the “truth-seeking” and “Utility-attaining” continuum evaluation model, and the balance between the two is relatively high, which accords with the translator’s general behavior law of “truth-seeking” as the basis and “Utility-attaining” as the application.
