Professor White’s Academic Track of London History Research—An Interview at Birkbeck,University of London

杰里·怀特教授回顾了他从事伦敦史研究的学术道路,从最初作为伦敦自治市的住房部工作人员关注市政住房、初涉伦敦住房史的学术写作,后研究整个20世纪伦敦史。在退休后,转为伦敦大学伯贝克学院的全职教授,专心从事伦敦史的写作。先后著有《19世纪的伦敦》《18世纪的伦敦》等著作,运用以专题为篇章的叙述模式,全方位地展示了伦敦近现代发展的历程。另外,还有几部专题性著作,如《齐柏林飞船之夜》、关于债务人监狱的《悲惨的大厦》,也获得了学术界的广泛认可。怀特教授是一位非学院式学者,在英国马克思主义社会史家拉斐尔·塞缪尔的指导下走上学术道路。本文是第一作者于2016年8月30日在伦敦大学杰里·怀特教授办公室进行学术访谈的实录。

Professor Jerry White reviewed his academic path in the study of London history,from the initial academic writing of the housing while working at the department of a London borough which focused on municipal housing and entered the amateur housing history of London.Then he turned to the writing process of studying the history of London in the entire 20th century.After retiring,he became a full-time professor at Birkbeck,University of London.He devoted himself to the writing of London history.He has successively written books on London in the 19th century and London in the 18th century,using the narrative mode with thematic chapters to display all aspects.The history of modern development in London.In addition,there are several monographs,such as Zeppelin Nights and Mansions of Misery on the debtor’s prison,which have also been widely recognized by the academic community.Professor White is a non-academic scholar who embarked on an academic path under the guidance of the British Marxist social historian Rafael Samuel.This article is a record of an academic interview conducted by the author,Lu Weifang in the office of Professor Jerry White at the University of London on August 30,2016.
