The article finds that the story content and plot development of Lu Xun’s novel The Rabbits and the Cat are highly similar to Chekhov’s novel An Event. To investigate whether Lu Xun had read Chekhov’s novel An Event, the article combed out which Japanese-translated Chekhov novels Lu Xun might have read while studying in Japan. Through investigation,it is found that Chekhov’s novel An Event had been translated nine times during the Meiji period in Japan, many of which had been published in literary magazines that Lu Xun paid close attention to during his stay in Japan. In addition, the article also finds that both the English and Chinese versions of the novel are likely to be within the scope of Lu Xun’s attention, so it can be speculated that some of the plots described in the novel inspired Lu Xun’s creation of The Rabbits and the Cat. At the same time, by comparing the two works, it can be seen that Lu Xun did not completely imitate the theme of the novel, but referred to Chekhov’s attitude towards young life and appealed to more people to pay attention to it.
