Ever since the European colonization of India, the establishment of colonial rule is seen as the beginning of the modernization process in India.Although studies of early modern Indian history, especially economic history, have reflected on the Europe-centric modernization narrative, the lack of research on the indigenous cultural modernization in the pre-colonial era still constrains the study of precolonial modernization in India. This paper focuses on early modern Hindi literature related to the weaver Kabir.By reclaiming its ideological content in the dual context of the development of the textile industry in early modern India and the mystical literary traditions of Indian weavers, this paper sorts out historical clues on how the urban textile industry in pre-colonial India already gave rise to modern thoughts and culture with imprints of the new era,in order to think beyond the singular“global modernization narrative”which was shaped by capitalist world system with colonial system of knowledge during the process of shaping the“centre-periphery”pattern,and revisit the plural early modernizations of the multi-civilizationworld.
