Nadine Gordimer focused on the failure of multi-racialist movement against Apartheid in the British Commonwealth Dominion of South Africa. The Englishman Toby Hood's first person narrative elaborates the racialized space of white city and black township, and his strangeness is manifested as foreignness, alienation and desolation. The sea route to Johannesburg and the roaming wherein, arouse the British colonist's postempire melancholia and crisis consciousness after the Anglo-Boer War.The negotiation of art space in Sophia Township's Black Renaissance, couples with the half-awake of black consciousness and the impracticality of liberal whites'color blindness. No man's land, the contact zone of different races, politically symbolizes the futility of passive resistance of multi-racialism,revealing the implied author's anxiety about the politics of race.
