On Zhou Dunyi’s Theory of Motion and Motionlessness from the Perspective of Confucianism and Taoism

周敦颐的《太极图说》从理论根源上来看,既有对道家思想体系的继承,也有对儒家思想的发展,将老子“静为躁君”的虚静论内化于其动静互为其根的思想当中,并在阴阳动静的化生过程之中体现了儒家的“至诚无息”论。唯有从儒道融合的角度进行考察,才能全面而彻底的把握周敦颐的动静观。

Zhou Dunyi’s“Taiji Diagram Theory”theoretically,both inherits Taoist thoughts,and develops Confucianism.He internalized Lao Tzu’s theory of emptiness and tranquility into his thought that motion and motionlessness are the root for one the other,which embodied the Confucian theory of“utmost sincerity with no self-interest involved”in the process of transformation and development of Yin and Yang.Only from the perspectives of Confucianism and Taoism,can Zhou Dunyi's concept of the static and dynamic be fully and thoroughly grasped.
