Emerging Narratives in British National Identity since the 1990s and Their Impact

在英国政治文化中,英格兰特性和不列颠特性常常被等同使用,用以指代英国的国家认同。自二十世纪九十年代以来,随着不列颠国家地位危机的显现,围绕对二十世纪七十年代开始盛行的激进民主观的批判,英国国家认同中出现了复兴英格兰和重塑不列颠这两大互为竞争的新兴叙事,使英格兰作为“一个想像的共同体”的观念逐渐深入人心。英格兰特性的回归降低了同联合王国联结的其他环——尤其是欧盟的重要性,深刻影响了不同行为体对欧盟的政治判断,成为英国脱欧重要的认知来源。

In British political culture,Englishness and Britishness are often used interchangeably to refer to Britain's national identity.Since the 1990s,with the emergence of the crisis of British nationhood,centered on the criticism of the radical democratic view that prevailed in the 1970s,two competing new narratives emerged in the British national identity,namely the revival of England and the reconstruction of Britain,which made the concept of England as“an imaginary community”gradually deeply rooted in people's hearts.The return of Englishness has reduced the importance of other links connected with the United Kingdom,especially the EU,which has profoundly influenced the political judgment of different agents on the EU and become an important source of cognition for the Brexit.
