The word "Bu" came later and was first found in the Li script, while the word "Ji" was first found in the Warring States script. The word "Buji" first appeared in Lun Heng of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and since its appearance, it has been used to refer to official documents and books used for registration and writing, such as household books, military registers, account books, etc. After the Eastern Han Dynasty, the term "Buji" was used more frequently in the Sui and Tang dynasties as well as the Southern Song and Northern Song dynasties, and its meaning was gradually enriched to include taxes and corvée, land and other related meanings. During Yuan Dynasty, due to the difference in cultural development and neglect of the importance of imperial examination system, the use of the word "Buji" decreased, and then reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Republic of China period, the use of the word decreased significantly and gradually died out, becoming a historical term.
