Community Imagination in Walter Scott’s Historical Novels

司各特凭借着丰富的想象力,将历史与现实巧妙地结合起来,风轻云淡地书写着宏大的历史叙事,描绘了从中世纪到资产阶级革命时期欧洲风起云涌的历史现状以及各共同体之间的争斗与认同,成就了大不列颠近三十部经典历史小说。在波澜壮阔的王位争夺、复辟争斗、宗教迫害之下,人物的命运与时代的发展紧密结合在一起。文章通过分析司各特历史小说中王室权贵、骑士军人、底层平民三组人物群像,挖掘司各特对于大不列颠民族身份建构的深度思考与书写,呈现他对于塑造团结、民主、平等、包容的大不列颠共同体国家建构观的宏愿。

With his rich imagination,Walter Scott skillfully combines history and reality,writes a grand historical narrative gently,depicts the turbulent historical situation in Europe from Middle Age to the bourgeois revolution period,the struggle and identity between the various communities,has achieved nearly thirty classic historical novels in Great Britain.However,under the magnificent struggle for the throne and the struggle for restoration,religious persecution,the fate of the characters and the development of the times are closely integrated.This paper analyzes three groups of characters,namely the royal magnate,knight soldiers,and low-level commoners in Scott’s historical novels,and deplores Scott’s deep thinking on the construction of the national identity of Great Britain,as well as his ambition to shape a united,democratic,equal and lenient Great Britain Community.
