Beginning with Villa Triste,Patrick Modiano’s works have always given the reader an impression of déjàvu.Often set in the 1960s,they depict the narrator’s relationship with a mysterious woman, her disappearance, and the narrator’s recollection and search for her.Focusing on these female characters, this study analyzes their common characteristics and the underlying reasons, and explores their symbolic significance with the help of Nora’s“realms of memory”theory. On the one hand, they act as“ferryman”who guides the narrators from the present to the past;on the other hand, symbolizing the“1960s”that had passed, they are“realms of memory”where Modiano’s unceasing battle with forgetfulness takes place.
