Mr.Semler’s Planet,based on the American society in the 1960s,describes the three days’life experience of a Jewish intel-lectual,Mr.Sammler,in his twilight years.By narrating the historical environment in which Mr.Sammler lived,Bellowanalyzed the in-teraction between text and history,considered the reasons for Sammler’s lack of social identity,and clarified that only through self-sha-ping can Sammler get out of the haze of history,regain his identity,finally find the meaning and value of survival.Therefore,the novel reflects Bellow’s clear attitude to historical events,highlighting the rich color of new historicism.At the same time,it provides an im-portant reference for the confused modern intellectuals to walk out of the survival dilemma.
