On Chinese Women Recorded in the Travel Notes of Foreigners in the Late Qing Dynasty

晚清来华外国人人数众多,从外交使节、商人到记者、探险家等,不一而足。他们留下了大量游记,其中记录了晚清女性的容貌装扮、家庭劳动、社会活动等内容。这些文本揭示出晚清女性生存境遇的复杂与艰难,表征着女性价值观念的因循与变革,显示出女性解放运动的进步与受挫,是研究晚清外国人眼中中国女性的重要资料。

There were a large number of foreigners who came to China in the late Qing Dynasty,from diplomatic envoys,businessmen to journalists,explorers and so on.They left a large number of travelogues,which recorded the late Qing women’s appearance,household labor,and social activities.These texts reveal the complexity and difficulty of women’s living conditions in the late Qing Dynasty,represent the progression and changes of women’s values,and show the progress and frustration of the women’s liberation movement.They are important materials for the study of Chinese women in the eyes of foreigners in the late Qing Dynasty.
