Zinc is the second most abundant trace element found in the central nervous system(CNS)of humans and animals. As a regulator necessary for maintaining brain function, zinc is essential for human and animal food. However, zinc is also a potentially toxic metal, and its imbalance is closely related to the pathogenesis of neurological diseases.Excessive zinc may induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage and inflammatory response in neurons, and lead to neuronal death through apoptosis and autophagy.By presenting an overview on the research status of zinc neurotoxicity and the possible mechanism of zinc induced neurotoxicity, this paper provides reference for further study of diseases caused by zinc homeostasis.
