Emendation and Interpretation of the “Records of Benefaction of the Jinghui Temple” in Chaozhou

潮州市区西湖山《净慧禅寺功德田记》是能解释元代社会经济和潮州地方社会若干面貌的重要史料,现有的三份录文都有若干问题,有必要加以校订。石刻记载了元代后至元六年潮州一位城居地主向净慧禅寺捐施土地的情况,其中涉及土地方位和相关地名、土地计量的方法、所有权和差税过割、地租缴纳时运用的量制等诸多问题,对了解元代潮州的历史地理、赋役和社会经济等有很高价值。

The “Records of Benefaction of the Jinghui Temple” in Xihu Mountain,Chaozhou City,is an important historical source that can explain several aspects of Chaozhou's socio-economic development and local society during the Yuan Dynasty.However,the three existing versions of the records have several problems that need to be emended.The stone inscription records the donation of land by a city-dwelling landowner in Chaozhou to the Jingshui Temple in the sixth year of the Later Zhiyuan period of Yuan Dynasty,which covers many issues such as the location of the land and related place names,the method of measuring the land,the ownership and taxation of the land,and the system of measurement applied in the payment of land rent,which is of great value in understanding the historical geography,taxation,and social economy of Chaozhou during the Yuan dynasty.
