Joseph Rock s Description of Naxi

清末民国时期,西方人约瑟夫·洛克对丽江的纳西人及其文化进行了大量的书写,这些等身著述甚至将他推上了“纳西学之父”的高位。通过阅读洛克的著述和传记,可以看到洛克的纳西书写以仪式和东巴经书的解读、翻译为主要内容,这与他的自卑人格、白人殖民者的优越感和非专业的学术背景有很大关系,加之他与纳西民众的疏离,就使得他的书写呈现出虽然写作对象是纳西人及其文化,但文字中却完全不见纳西人的特点。

During the period of the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,Joseph Rock,a westerner,wrote a great deal about the Naxi people and their culture,which even promoted him to the position of"the father of Naxi Studies".By reading Rock's writings and biography,we can see Rock's study is mainly about Naxi rituals and Dongba scriptures interpretation.His inferiority,white settlers superiority and non-professional academic background have much to do with this study character,and his alienation of the Naxi people makes his writings totally ignore Naxi people,although his study objects are Naxi culture.
