Pre-conditions of Inter-generational Transmission Strategic Reversals in the Work of Liu Jiakun,Zhao Yang,and Shui Yanfei

This paper is a study of thework of three contemporary Chinese architects interms ofprojectconstraints,keystrategic responses,menus of strategic moves,and collective memory.There are two key aspects of the approach taken here:First,by making use of detailed interviews of principal architects and project architects,we clarified the relationship between explicit and implicit considerations.A diagram is used to strengthen our grasp of specifics.Second,sincethereis nospecific inter-generational transmission of ideas and skills between the architects under study,we propose a shift of focus to pre-conditions of such transmission.Two questions are involved:(1)If inter-generational transmission is not merely a matter of architectural features,concepts,values,andattitudes towards materials,or design techniques,how would one understand therelationship between a menu of strategic moves and a broader but implicit level of hedged considerations in specific design scenarios?And(2)what can we make of the relationship between architectural practice and collective memory?
