Interpretation of the Failed Rebellion of the Protagonist in A Pair of Silk Stockings From Lacan’s Three Orders Theory

《一双丝袜》是凯特·肖邦以19世纪末美国女性为原型创作的短篇小说。本文旨在运用拉康的三界理论分析主人公在一双丝袜的刺激下开始追求“理想之我”,但是最终失败的故事。在象征界,主人公一直扮演着“房中天使”的角色;在想象界,她不断消费来满足自己的欲望,追求“理想之我”,但是欲望永远不能满足;最后,她想回到最初的状态实在界,可是它只是一个虚无。这篇小说其实从头到尾都表明了主人公想要获得独立的不可能性,从而表达了肖邦对当时在受男权社会压迫下女性的同情,没有体现出其强烈的女权意识和女性觉醒的精神。

A Pair of Silk Stockings is a short story written by Kate Chopin based on American women in the late 19th century.The paper aimed to employ Lacan’s Three Orders Theory to analyze the protagonist who started to pursue the“ideal self”stimulated by a pair of stockings but finally failed.In the Symbolic,the protagonist played the role of“The Angel in the House”;in the Imaginary,she kept spending to satisfy her desires until she found“ideal self”,but actually the desire would never be satisfied;finally,she wanted to return to the original state,the Real,which actually represented nothingness.the novel from the beginning to the end showed that the impossibility of the protagonist gaining independence and expressed Chopin’s sympathy for women oppressed by the patriarchal society at that time,not her strong feminist consciousness and awakening spirit.
