Swimming for Women, translated by Jiang Lianggui,a famous physical educator in the Republic of China,is the earliest known swimming book for women in China.By examining the social and historical background of the translation, the translator’s personal life and the translation strategies adopted, this paper reveals that the call for“strengthening the body”and“saving the country”during the Republic of China is the ideological background of the translation;the lack of swimming books for women is the practical need of the translation, and the translator Jiang Lianggui’s own life experience is the inner motivation of the translation. In addition, this paper finds that Jiang Lianggui,as a translator and a sports scholar, can not only reasonably use various translation methods and strategies to make the translation fluent and easy to understand, but also use his professional expertise to creatively translate the swimming terms and correct intellectual errors in the original text. This translator model provides a useful reference for the current non-literary translation practice.
