Starting from the late Qing Dynasty, printing technologies such as lead printing, lithographic printing, collotype printing and metal plate printing were introduced to China and are widely used in publishing.Luo Zhenyu came into contact with these modern printing technologies quite early and published a large number of catalogues and photocopies of ancient books, with both aesthetic and academic value, throughout his lifetime. This paper examines Luo Zhenyu's correspondences with various other people of his time and the prefaces and postscripts he wrote for the books he printed,in connection with the related books,to present the characteristics of the books printed and published by Luo Zhenyu using various modern printing techniques as a way to pass down cultural heritage from previous ages. The author believes that the high quality of the books Luo published can be attributed to his familiarity with the various modern printing techniques, flexibility in choosing printing techniques according to the specific conditions of each book to be published, and attention to all parts of the publishing process from photography to binding.Although Luo claimed to value collotype printing over lithographic printing,he never really kept any modern printing method out of his sight while traditional woodblock printing was also one of his options. In sum, this case study on Luo Zhenyu's attitude towards modern printing reveals to us that scholars of the time had two different general inclinations regarding printing techniques:some valued the new while otherswereconservative.
