As human society moved from the handicraft stage to the era of machine printing,changes in the printing process and the emergence of new printing techniques have had a direct and profound impact on the art of book-making and the aesthetics of books.The Western book art we see today came not only from the efforts of successive generations of printing workers,artists and designers;it also reflects changes in aesthetics produced by the changes in the social landscape and the book system.This paper discusses how changes in the Western book system transformed book art during the transition of human society from the handicraft era to themachine era.
