The development of Hu Xianzhang's thought on university culture has gone through three major stages:the formation period,the development period and the maturity period,reflecting the development characteristics from spontaneous thinking to conscious thinking,from partial thinking to holistic thinking,from practical thinking to philosophical thinking.The main connotation of Hu Xianzhang's thought on university culture can be summarized as“people orientation”,“integration”and“culture education”.“People orientation”emphasizes that the construction of university culture should realize the free and comprehensive development of human beings in the process of manifesting their vitality,subjectivity and integrity;“integration”emphasizes that the construction of university culture should be guided by the philosophical concept of integration,and dialectically deal with important themes of university development,such as relationship between ancient and modern heritage,Chinese and western culture,as well as liberal and professional education,arts,sciences and technology;“culture education”emphasizes that the university should be highly developed in the process of cultural self-awareness.It emphasizes that the university should inherit the excellent traditional Chinese culture and promote the new in a high degree of cultural self-awareness,and cultivate people in the cultural integration.Guided by Marxism,Hu Xianzhang's thought on university culture reflects the distinctive characteristics of being based on practice,dialectical thinking,and tradition towards innovations in its methodology.
