Laurence Binyon's poetic attainments directly influenced his understanding of Chinese painting and his thinking on the relationship between poetry and painting.In his opinion,“rhythm”is the fundamental principle of poetry and painting and a way to bridge the differences between art's forms.In addition,he attempted to make an ample exposition on the“spirit-resonance”of Chinese painting from the perspective of poetics,and from Wordsworth and other British romantic poets expressions about the relationship between human and nature,he found the possibility of communicating Chinese art and Western art.Moreover,his understanding of Chinese painting is not limited to the overview of art history,but reflects a cross-cultural thought of the relationship between poetry and painting,which not only sets up a new aesthetic and thinking mode for Europeans to appreciate Chinese painting,but also provides a rich and inspiring practical model for the study of Chinese painting from a unique perspective.
