The Impact of Non-cognitive Skills on Gender Wage Gap

摘要 利用2018年中国家庭追踪调查数据(CFPS),研究了非认知技能对性别工资差距的影响。采用国际通用的大五人格模型来度量非认知能力,研究发现非认知能力综合指标每提升一个标准差,劳动力的小时工资收入增长约2.5%。分解结果表明:非认知能力的特征差异是导致性别工资差距的重要因素,尤其对高收入群体更是如此。当进一步考虑职业选择的内生问题时,非认知技能显著增加了劳动力进入白领职业的概率,且整体上白领职业内非认知能力对性别工资差距的贡献要高于蓝领职业,但在两类职业内非认知能力对不同收入水平上性别工资差距的影响存在一定差异。 Based on the data of China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)in 2018,we explore the impact of noncognitive skills on the gender wage gap.This paper uses the Big-Five personality model to construct the index of noncognitive skills.The results show that the hourly wage of workers increases by about 2.5%when the comprehensive index of non-cognitive skills increases by one standard deviation.The decomposition results show that the characteristic difference of non-cognitive skills is an important factor leading to gender wage gap,especially for high-income groups.When further considering the endogenous problem of occupational choice,non-cognitive skills significantly increase the probability of individuals entering white-collar occupations,and on the whole,the contribution of non-cognitive skills to the gender wage gap in white-collar occupations is higher than that in blue collar occupations,but there are still some differences in the impact of non-cognitive skills on the gender wage gap at different income levels in the two types of occupations.
