Andrew’s Brain is a masterpiece of Doctorow in which he turns to human consciousness and cognition. It integrates personal incidents with collective events to express a holistic understanding of traumatic experience. The uniqueness of the novel lies in the cognitive scientist’s perspective of examining human beings’ suffered trauma and emphasizing ethical responsibility of the self as the subject. The sense of guilt is the victim’s self-blame perception of trauma,replacing the discourse of innocent victim and challenging the values of the oppositional paradigm of the perpetrator and the victim. Through direct intervening in the 9/11 traumatic discourse,Doctorow sublimates the personal trauma cognition into the concern of community’s shared future.
