Graham Swift’s second novel Shuttlecock is a narrative of the growth of the protagonist Prentis, who is in his thirties, anxious and stressed, and in a mess of interpersonal relations. It can be found that his crux actually comes from the confrontation between his weak “being-for-itself”and gaze. When he is a teenager,he suffers excessive gaze because of his successful father. His “ego-ideal”is not completed. At work the power gaze from his boss makes him uneasy and anxious. He doesn’t want to be the “being-for-others”,but he hasn’t achieved the transcendence of the “being-for-itself”. His subjectivity can’t be constructed, and the change in his identity as a power gazer contributes to his subject construction. Through Prentis’ experience,Swift reveals the functional significance of gaze on human existence, and the influence of gaze under the influence of power on human survival.
