Sage’s Shrine: the sacred and the mundane

祭祀礼仪是中国古代国家礼制的重要组成部分,圣贤祠是用于祭祀圣贤的建筑物,在传统社会“庙学合一”的教育制度下,与教学空间共同组合构成了学校建筑的基本形态。作为物质性的空间媒介,圣贤祠在教化实践中并不仅仅扮演着“工具性”或是“空介质”的角色,而是作为具有“能动性”的媒介参与进了教化实践活动的行动者网络之中。圣贤祠以其作为视觉媒介的“可见性”“观看者解读”等特性以及作为房屋媒介拥有“准入机制”和“地方性”、“邻近性”等特性,影响甚至形塑了中国传统社会的教化实践本身。

Ritual ceremonies were very much a part of the ancient China’s state rituals. Sage’s Shrine, dedicated to sages, also served as schools. It did not merely function as a space for education;instead it participated in education network through its spatiality of accessibility and locality, and its visualization of visibility and interpretation, which has influenced or even shaped educational practices in ancient China.
