A Probe into the Metaphorical Meaning of Chinese and English Words with“Mouth”

作为人类概念系统的核心要件之一,身体隐喻已当仁不让地成为我们日常交际的重要语料来源和矿藏储备。世界各种语言中数量可观的语汇都是通过身体隐喻拓展和延续的。通过选取身体器官“口/嘴”(mouth)为新研究对象,在搜集和归整汉英语言相关词汇的隐喻用例基础上,借助认知隐喻学的“体验哲学”和“文化特异性”两大理论分析工具,辨析两种语言相关词汇隐喻意义的跨语言同异,旨在发掘语言意义衍生的具身本源和异同背后的深层认知理据,以期为其他身体部位隐喻拓展路径奠定扎实的实践基础。

As one of the core elements of human conceptual system,body metaphors have become an important corpus source and abundant reserve in our daily life and communication.A considerable number of lexicons in various languages across the globe are expanded and inherited from body metaphors.This paper intends to conduct a novel case study,on the basis of col‐lecting and reorganizing the metaphorical uses of Chinese and English words containing“mouth”,with the help of the two theo‐retical analysis tools in cognitive metaphorology—“experiential philosophy”and“cultural specificity”.It distinguishes the cross-linguistic similarities and differences of metaphorical meanings of relevant words,with regards to exploring the deep cognitive motivation behind the coexistence of sharedness and discrepancies,in an attempt to lay a solid foundation for the extension of metaphorical paths of other non-core body parts.
