The Precise Chinese Translation and Interpretation of the AI Term“Agent”and its Philosophical Significance

哲学社会科学各学科与人工智能(AI)的交叉领域研究所涉及的主体共同指向人工智能中的agent。但人工智能中agent的中文译名并未形成共识,这限制了跨学科研究的深入。agent是具有行动能力的存在,是行动者或行使力量者,应译为“行为体”。应当区分行为体和智能行为体。没有一个行为体自身是有智能的;只有出现涌现性的行为体社会或行为体群组才可能是智能的。人工智能领域的行为体与行为力(agency)之间,既存在涌现性的关系,也存在“一体两面”的关系。人工智能中行为体的特征体现了意向性;给人工智能中agent赋予意向性仍在推进过程中。

The domain subject involved in the intersection of artificial intelligence and various disciplines of philosophy and social sciences jointly point to“agent”in AI.There is no consensus on the Chinese translation of the“agent”in AI,which limits the depth of interdisciplinary research.An agent is a being with the capacity to act,the one that acts or exerts power,and should be translated as xingweiti(doer or actor).A distinction should be made between an agent and an intelligent agent.None of agents is itself intelligent.Only societies of agents or groups of agents that appear emergent property can be intelligent.There is both an emergent relationship and“one integrity with both sides”relationship between agents and agency in AI field.The characteristics of agents in AI embody intentionality.Giving intentionality to agents in AI is still in the process of progress.
