A questionnaire survey was conducted on 2102 junior high school students from 6 secondary schools in Guangdong province, aiming to examine the impact of academic encouragement on depression among junior high school students and to test the mediating role of school connectedness and the moderating role of grit in the relationship between them. The results showed that academic encouragement had a significant negative predictive effect on depression.School connectedness mediated the association between academic encouragement and depression. Moreover, grit can moderate the direct pathway between academic encouragement and depression,as well as the second half of the indirect pathway. The main conclusion of this study:Academic encouragement can reduce junior high school studentsdepression by increasing school connectedness, and grit can enhance the buffering effect of academic encouragement and school connectedness on depression. This study suggests that more attention should be paid to academic encouragement, leveraging the strengths and building the confidence of junior high school students;establishing school connectedness to enhance their sense of participation, belonging, and identification with the school;and cultivating grit to increase their resilience, thus prevent and reduce depression among junior high school students.
