TAKING THE LING CANAL AS THE LINK:ANCIENT GUILIN'S FOREIGN CULTURAL EXCHANGES AND ITS ROLE

秦朝在湘桂走廊修建的灵渠,将漓江与湘江相连,是古代海上丝绸之路沟通中原与海外联系的重要交通枢纽,也是桂林古代对外文化交流的重要通道。秦汉以来,以灵渠两岸为中心的桂林地区发现的不同时期的具有外来文化特征的文物,是不同时期该地区与不同国家或地区交流的反映。桂林便利的水陆交通条件,是支撑该地区对外文化交流的关键因素。特殊的地理位置、政治因素以及经济、文化等,也是重要的原因。对外文化交流,促进了古代桂林社会经济的发展,也密切了桂林与世界的联系。

The Ling Canal,built in the Qin Dynasty along the Xianggui Corridor,connects the Lijiang River with the Xiangjiang River.In ancient times,it was an important transportation hub of the Maritime Silk Road,connecting the Central Plains and overseas countries and serving as an important channel for Guilin's foreign cultural exchanges.Since the Qin and Han Dynasties,cultural relics with exotic features from different periods have been found in the Guilin area,centred on the two sides of the Ling Canal,proving the exchange between this region and different countries or regions in different periods.The convenient land and sea transportation in the Guilin area is an essential supportive factor for foreign cultural exchange,while special geographical location,political factors,and economic and cultural elements are also massive causes.Foreign cultural exchanges promote the development of Guilin's social economy in ancient times and also reflect the close contact between this region and the outside world.
