杨宪益和霍克思《红楼梦》英译本的对比研究——以三十三回为例

On the English Versions of The Dream of Red Mansions Translated by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes——Taking Chapter 33 as an Example

在众多《红楼梦》英译本中,影响较大的是杨宪益、戴乃迭夫妇的A Dream of Red Mansions与大卫·霍克思(David Hawkes)的The Story of the Stone。这两种译本在小说题目、章回目录、叙事策略等方面运用了不同的翻译方法,因而在成文风格及读者体验等方面产生了不同的效果。杨译本多采用异化翻译方法,在意义和形式上尽量与原文对等;霍译本在译出原文内容的基础上更多强调译文的文学性和可读性。

Among the English versions,A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang and The Story of the Stone translated by David Hawkes have drawn the most attention.The two versions adopted different methods and strategies during the translation,which lead to different effects in the text style and readers’experience.The version by Yang Xianyi is mostly translated by the use of foreignization,which tries to be equal to the original text both in meaning and in form;while the translation by Hawks pays more attention to both the literariness and readability based on the meaning of the original text.
