Public Toilet Revolution:Analysis of Shanghai Public Toilet Management during the Republic of China

民国时期,上海的城市化进程进一步加快,人口流动性不断加强,各项公共事业迅速发展,而人们日常生活所必需的公厕作为城市公共卫生的窗口,逐渐被纳入到了上海政府公共事业的范围之中,成为市政建设的重要内容之一。尽管民国时期上海公厕的治理,还存在着诸多的困难,尤其是公厕在筹建和治理的过程中受到资金、环境、历史等因素的制约,但该时期上海公厕的治理在由政府主导到全民参与的过程中依旧获得了显著的进步与发展。上海公厕作为上海城市文明发展的见证者,它的演变也展现了当时上海社会生活风貌的变迁。

During the period of the Republic of China,the urbanization process of Shanghai was further accelerated,the mobility of population was continuously strengthened,and various public utilities developed rapidly.As a window of urban public health,public toilets,which were necessary for People's Daily life,were gradually included in the scope of public utilities of Shanghai government and became one of the important contents of municipal construction.Although the management of public toilets in Shanghai during the Republic of China,there are still many difficulties,especially the establishment and management of public toilets in the process of capital,environment,history and other factors constraints.However,during this period,the governance of public toilets in Shanghai still made significant progress and development in the process of government leading to public participation.As the witness of the development of Shanghai's urban civilization,the evolution of Shanghai's public toilet also shows the change of Shanghai's social life style at that time.
