“Books Donated by Wu Mi”are the main foreign language books that Wu Mi read in different stages of his life,thus could be used to reconstruct the western classical knowledge of Wu Mi and the other Chinese intellectual elites in the first half of the 20th century.To be specific,Wu Mi has a relatively comprehensive exploration of western classics,his ancient Greek and Latin languages ability could support his close readings of classical texts;there are traces of imitating western scholars in his classical research,but he produces many fresh ideas;his translation principles allow the translator to add or delete some ideas of the original texts,and then help him to rewrite the west classical culture with the traditional Chinese language and values.Wu Mi's knowledge of western Classics mirrored the enquiry of the Chinese intellectual elites in the 20th century represented by him,and this still inspires contemporary scholars.
