This paper will first focus on the image of China in the text A discourse of a discoverie for a new passage to Cataia[Cathay](1576)by Sir Humphrey Gilbert(1539-1583).Reference will also be made to other pre-1576 English texts presenting images of China.Next will be examined how these images of China led to the unsuccessful voyages of Sir Martin Frobisher(c.1535 or 15391594)and John Davis(c.1550-1605)to discover a Northwest Passage to China. In terms of Imagology, this study will argue that an image not only has a textual reality but can also be a factor in engendering specific actions.
