Kenzaburo Oe reconstructs in his maiden novel,Nip the Buds,a special space for the co-existance of utopia and prison, together with a third presence-plague,presenting a picture of human life within an ambiance of pestilence. As a metaphorical novel of considerable intensity,Nip for the Buds conveys the author’s aspiration for good life and a reflection of post-war Japan with a focus on the crisis and latent troubles in peacetime, aiming to evoke consciousness of contingency of the populace. When the COVID-19 just receded,a thematic study of space and pestilence is definitely realistically significant.
