Winter Recipes from the Collective is the most recent poetry collection by contemporary American poet Louise Glück,who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2020.Glück adopts Chinese elements from the Daodejing in her poems, along with Chinese images such as the painting Zhijitu and bonsai art.The Eastern outlook of life drawn from ancient Chinese philosophy and art helps the elderly to gain strength to confront the impermanence of life and spiritual gloom. This paper analyzes how Chinese elements fit into the thematic exploration of old age in three ways, namely, the life outlook of the elderly, the poetic communal world of the elderly, and Glück's reflection on issnes regarding the elderly. The poet balances collectivism and individualism, criticizes American society's ignorance about the elderly and imagines a poetic elderly world of care, love, freedom and ease.
