Up to today the traditional rule in English that one form stands for one meaning is strictly observed. But what often challenges and puzzles scholars of English at home is the phenomenon that such verbs as swim/climb/play/walk/ride/load can be collocated either with a noun especially a locative noun with a preposition or with one without a preposition. What really leads to this free alternation long remains a problem. The author of this paper claims a solution to this problem by executing three semantic properties, namely COMPLETION/FEAT and WHOLISTIC AFFECTEDNESS which prove to effectively exercise a partial pragmatic constraints on the alternation. As determinants these three semantic properties respectively urge language users to select VP over V+Prep according to what can be contextually interpreted as COMPLETION/FEAT and WHOLISTIC EFFECTEDNESS in the discourse.
