The Crisis of Modernity behind the Urban Landscape:Spatial Narrative in Manhattan Transfer

在《曼哈顿中转站》中,多斯·帕索斯以20世纪初期的纽约作为小说的中心形象,为此他选择了以空间和空间流动为架构的双重叙事结构模式。一方面,小说的表层叙事采用了弱化时间模式的空间叙事方式和不同空间场景的拼贴式叙事,在完成对纽约社会生活全景式描绘的同时,突出了纽约这一空间形象的故事主体地位。另一方面,小说的深层叙事通过物象空间、话语空间、地理空间及文化空间之间的对比和融合,揭示了美国现代化都市文明以资本逻辑和货币哲学为核心的根本特征,反映出作家对物化城市空间状态的忧虑和抵制。

In Manhattan Transfer,Dos Passos placed the urban image of New York at the centre of novel by choosing a dual narrative structure of space and spatial flow.On the one hand,the weakened spatial narrative of time mode and montage narrative of different spatial scenes are superficially adopted to depict a panoramic picture of social life in New York City,highlighting the leading position of New York image in the novel.On the other hand,the deep narrative structure of the novel focuses on the contrast and fusion of object space,discourse space,geographic space and cultural space,which reveals the capital logic and monetary philosophy of American modern urban civilization and expresses the writer’s resistance towards the materialized state of urban space.
