“书人相依”:北大学人与商务印书馆《甘珠尔》的故事

"Interdependence between Books and Scholars":A Story on Some Scholars from Peking University and the Tibetan Kangyur from the Commercial Press

图书是建构学术史的主要支柱。图书与学人之间的互动与相依,展现出学术史上曾发生过的“鲜活的生命历程”。文章以北京大学多位学者(胡适、钢和泰、季羡林、王森)与1924年商务印书馆持有的一套藏文《甘珠尔》之间的故事为例,梳理双方数十年的交往依存情况。由此探讨北大学者在建设早期东方学、推进学科发展过程中所历经的诸多艰难和从商务印书馆、北平图书馆等社会机构所得到的无私帮助。以张元济为首的商务印书馆同仁对北大学科建设的大力支持,不是纯粹出于朋友的个人私谊,而是出于以促进学术精进、民族图强为目的。揭示了近现代学术史中所隐含的复杂的书人关联,构成了一幅中国现代学术与文化的璀璨画卷,至今仍有不可忽视的积极意义,也为加深认识学科史图景的整体性提供了依据。

Books constitute the main pillar in constructing the history of scholarship.The close relationship and interdependence between books and scholars illustrate the vivid paths of life that have taken place in the history of scholarship.This study examines the history of interactions between scholars such as Prof.Hu Shi,Baron Alexander Wilhelm von Stael-Holstein,Ji Xianlin,and Wang Sen from Peking University(PKU)and a collection of Tibetan Kangyur holded by the Commercial Press in 1924,by combing through their several decades-long correspondence and interactions with each other.Although there were many difficulties experienced by many scholars from PKU in the process of building early oriental studies and promoting discipline development,they also received selfless help from some social institutions such as the Commercial Press and National Beijing Library.The strong support from colleagues at the Commercial Press,led by Mr.Zhang Yuanji,for discipline construction at PKU,was not solely based on personal friendship,but also on the promotion of academic progress and national strength.This article will shed light on the unspoken,complex connections between books and scholars in academic history during modern China.This interaction paints an excellent portrait of modern Chinese academia and culture,and is significant to help us to more deeply recognize the integrity of studying the history of scholarship in modern China.
