The musicians who studied in Japan in the early twentieth century, such as Shen Xinguang,Wang Hongnian,Cao Rujin,Zeng Zhimin and Xiao Youmei have been widely researched, while little has been said a-bout the earlier students who studied music in the United States.Taking Xie Shaoying a female student from Fuzhou who went to the United States twice between 1900 and 1910 to study music-as a case study, this article examines the experiences of the late Qing Dynasty Chinese who studied W estern music in the United States,as well as their musical education activities and musical exchanges between China and the United States after they returned home from their studies.
