闵福德《聊斋志异》译本显化翻译研究

On Explicitation of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by John Minford

文章以闵福德《聊斋志异》显化翻译为研究的出发点,采用“二对一”对比研究模式,对照原作,同时参照翟理斯译本,分为指称意义、言内意义和语用意义显化三个层面以及显性显化翻译和隐性显化翻译两个类别剖析31篇重合选择的故事,认为闵福德显化翻译导向译本准确、晓畅易懂的风格。文章进一步分析显化翻译的深层动因在于闵福德沟通中西的文化立场与重构两个层面的“异”的翻译观。

Starting from noticeable explicitation in John Minford’s English version of Liaozhai Zhiyi,Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio,this paper studies explicitaion in the version by referring to Herbert A.Giles’s Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio with the overlapped selection of 31 stories in both versions as the linguistic material to shun explicitness possibly triggered by English style.It integrates Charles W.Morris’s triadic typology of meaning,i.e.semantic meaning,syntactic meaning,and pragmatic meaning,as well as degree of explicitness by form,i.e.overt and covert,into the investigation framework so as for an all-around analysis.The paper holds that the instances of explicitation lead to Minford’s accurate,lucid,and intelligible style.It further explores the motivation,that is,Minford’s cultural position of communicating the Chinese-English cultures and translation outlook of recreating the two levels of“strang?-eness”represented in Liaozhai Zhiyi.
