The advancement of Internet information technology and the rise of self-media in recent years have made artworks in wilderness known to more people and provided space for interpretation and development. The “Wilderness Art Project” in Guazhou, Gansu Province is a typical example in this case. As a native of Northwest China, sculptor Dong Shubing, professor of the Academy of Arts Design of the Tsinghua University, has been committed to presenting the history of his hometown to the public through sculptures, in the hope to arouse everyone's love for this land. He believes that artists should return to their most familiar environment for inspiration, instead of blindly imitating others or staying away from the crowd. With the completion of works such as the Son of the Earth, Boundless and the Whisperer, Dong Shubing and his friends have embarked on a path of “wilderness art” in the Gobi Desert.
