Towards an Imagined Imperial Community:The Trope of Map and Mapping in Treasure Island

This paper revolves around the trope of a map,discussing how it serves as a narrative,cognitive and interactive practice in Treasure Island in relation to the imagination of the British imperial community.Through the representation of the treasure map,it argues that Stevenson not only creates a community of treasure hunters,but also transforms imperial explorations and deeds into a play.The reader is then invited to decode the symbol X on the map together with the characters in the narrative.As a result,the reader's imagination becomes a link between the story and the world.The imperial community transcends the boundary of the narrative to encompass readers who read the story.This centripetal force of the map trope also reveals the vulnerability of the British imperial community as those excluded and repressed factors repeatedly return to disrupt its stable workings.As a politically symbolic act,the trope of the map constructs an imperial narrative fused with hope and anxiety.
