Selecting the data of the Yangtze River Delta from 2007 to 2019 and using threshold model, spatial measurement and other methods to explore the relationship between industrial agglomeration mode and urban innovation capability, this paper introduces variables such as urban population size and urban openness, empirically examines the impact of urban location factors on the externality of industrial agglomeration, and further explores the spillover effect of industrial agglomeration on the innovation capability of surrounding cities. The results showed that, from the perspective of the Yangtze River Delta as a whole, diversified agglomeration models promoted the innovation output of cities, while specialized agglomeration models were the opposite. And the above conclusion still holds after replacing variables. The population size of cities presents a significant threshold effect, and diversified agglomeration is more suitable for large cities. In addition, cities with higher levels of specialization and agglomeration are more likely to benefit from the openness of higher cities;the specialized agglomeration of industries in neighboring cities has had a negative impact on the innovation output of the city, while the spatial effect of diversified agglomeration is not significant.Based on the perspective of enhancing innovation capabilities, the author provides several insights into the selection of industrial agglomeration models for various cities in the Yangtze River Delta.
