Identity Construction in“Third Space”--A Case Study of Another Holiday for the Prince

伊丽莎白·乔利的短篇小说《王子的又一假期》中的三位主人公在英国宗主国文化和本土文化的碰撞下经历了从身份迷失,到身份的构建过程。霍米·巴巴的“第三空间”理论探讨文化的混杂为文化碰撞中身份的构建提供有效的途径。文化碰撞下对单一文化片面接受或摒弃会导致个体陷入困境和边缘化,只有突破二元对立接受文化的混杂才能化解身份危机。

The three protagonists in Elizabeth Jolly’s short story Another Holiday for the Prince undergo a process from identity loss to identity construction under the collision of British suzerain culture and native culture.Using Homi Bhabha’s theory of“third space”,this paper explores how the hybridity of cultures can provide an effective way to construct identity in the midst of cultural collisions,where one-sided acceptance or abandonment of monoculture will lead to the individual’s dilemma and marginalization.It is found that only by breaking through the binary opposition and accepting the hybridity of cultures can the identity crisis be solved.
