《通艺录》作为程瑶田一生治学精神的集中体现,所涉范围十分宽广,涵盖训诂、水理、农业、动植物、宫室等诸多方面,蕴含了不少词源探求的理论和方法,其提出的“触类旁通,其义自见”与“大率不可典要,惟变所适”以及重目验、实证和“礼失求诸野”的观点对词源探求有重要影响。程瑶田《通艺录》中的词源探求不仅为汉语词源学史的研究提供了充实的语料和重要的理论方法,而且对同源词的系联、词典释义的补充以及词源词典的编纂均有一定的借鉴意义。

Tong Yi Lu is a representative work of Cheng Yaotian,covering a wide range of aspects,including exegesis,golden stone,archeology,geography,agriculture,animals and plants,palace,etc.,and contains a lot of etymological exploration.Many of his ideas have important influence on etymological exploration.The etymological exploration in Cheng Yaotian's Tong Yi Lu not only provides a substantial corpus and important theoretical methods for the study of the history of Chinese etymology,but also has certain reference significance for the cognate words,the supplement of dictionary interpretation,and the compilation of etymological dictionaries.
