Les Années is an auto-socio-biography of Annie Ernaux,a celebrated contemporary French writer.It is not only a reconstruction of Ernaux’s personal history,but also an intersection of her individual memories with the events of her time.It captures six decades of social change in France,evoking the collective memory of her generation.Drawing on genuine personal experience and social history,Ernaux recreates the extraordinary years,using photos to connect the dots.At the same time,major events of the time are fused into reproduction of memories,shedding light on the writer’s stance,view-points and acute sense of social responsibility.By exploring the writing of remembrances in Les Années,the present analysis attempts to investigate how Ernaux came to blend“testimony”and“commitment”in her writing.
