The complex and diverse microbial communities in animal digestive tract metabolize nutrients and produce short chain fatty acids(SCFAs),bioamines and other active substances involved in host physiological regulation.Among them, the SCFAs produced by microbial fermentation are mainly acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid, and have various biological functions such as participating in metabolic regulation, promoting gastrointestinal development, alleviating tissue inflammation, enhancing immune function, regulating gastroin⁃testinal microbial community and maintaining intestinal barrier function. In this paper, the involvement of SC⁃FAs in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism homeostasis and intestinal barrier in ruminants and their application in animal production were reviewed, providing a theoretical basis for the development of SCFAs as functional feed additives in ruminant production.
