Cave 140 at the Maijishan Grottoes is a small cave built in the late Northern Wei dynasty. The newly discovered mural on the ceiling of the cave, which dates to the Northern Zhou dynasty,is a combination of apsaras and a stupa, and is the only extant image to contain such a combination at the Maijishan Grottoes. The image is also notable for providing researchers with important historical information about the history and renovation of the cave.Research on the image combination demonstrates that during the Northern Zhou dynasty, the Maijishan Grottoes was influenced by Buddhist art from both the Southern and Northern Dynasties and gradually developed its own unique characteristics.
