With the keen interests in Numismatics sparked by the Grand Tour,British writer Joseph Addison embeds the classical quotations and sketches on the ancient Roman medals into his travel narrative Remarks on Italy.By the interaction between the classical poems and medal images,he endeavors to uncover the buried cultural codes in the ancient empire.Medals,in parading the imperial feats and human virtues, are crowned with the significance of moral teaching and political propaganda. The metaphor of removing the rust from the ancient medals manifests Addison's intention of writing this travelogue:he laments over the fall of ancient Roman Empire and pins the hope of classical revival on Britain with the expectation of retrieving the ancient Roman glory in this new Augustan Age.
